Cardinals drop NMMI, 42-32
The TVCC defense shut down New Mexico Military Institute in the fourth quarter, leading the Cardinals to a 42-32 win at Bruce Field Saturday afternoon.
The win improved TVCC's record to 3-1 in conference play, while NMMI fell to 2-3.
While both teams showed the ability to move the ball through the first three quarters, TVCC held NMMI to three straight three-and-outs to start the fourth quarter.
Meanwhile, the Cardinal's first three drives of the quarter accounted for 114 yards. Two ended in NMMI territory and one finished with a 27-yard touchdown run by Andrew Henry. Henry made an NMMI defender miss at the line of scrimmage with an ankle-breaking jump cut and raced untouched to the end zone, putting the game out of reach.
The Cardinals got big games from three receivers, including one who took snaps as QB.
Jordan Davis had reps as both a receiver and quarterback and provided a first half spark for TVCC. He ran for a TD, threw a TD, and his running set up a third score.
Julian Johnson exploded for 111 yards and three touchdowns on four receptions for the Cardinals.
Two of Johnson's TDs came from starting quarterback Matt Morrissey, who also threw a TD pass to Cordrick Dunn.
In his first action of the year, Cam Camper exploded for 107 yards on seven receptions.
Defensively the Cardinals were able to shut down NMMI's vaunted rushing attack and the nation's top running back Anthony Grant.
NMMI was able to hit on some big pass plays, however. They racked up more than a third of their total yardage on three receptions, including a flea flicker. Those plays led directly to 14 points for NMMI.
The Cardinals will return to Bruce Field next Saturday, May 1, to take on the Blinn Buccaneers. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
