The theater at Stage Notes Academy of Performing Arts (SNAPA) might still have a few unfinished corners, but the heart and soul of the people on its stage are anything but incomplete.
Tuesday night, during a lively dress rehearsal of "Catch Me If You Can," the cast's enthusiasm was infectious, a testament to the passion driving this young nonprofit. I roared with laughter on more than one occasion, and the dramatic moments and singing ensured there was something for everyone.
Director Karen Holmes told me that Athens is turning into a burgeoning theater hub, fueling the growth of SNAPA. She said actors come from all around the county and beyond to take part in their productions and classes.
SNAPA is not in competition with the Henderson County Performing Arts Center, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. Instead, they add to the theater community by providing additional opportunities and allowing actors to grow in their craft.
They are not just building a stage; they are building a community.
"Catch Me If You Can" opens this week at the theater located at 224 North Prairieville Street, just a block off the square, with performances on July 26, 27, and August 2, 3 at 7 p.m., and matinees on July 28 and August 4 at 3 p.m.
This show is recommended for patrons 13 years and older as we follow the adventure of Frank Abagnale, Jr., a precocious teenager who runs away from home seeking fame and fortune. With nothing but his boyish charm, a big imagination, and millions of dollars in forged checks, Frank poses as a pilot, doctor, and lawyer—living the high life and winning the girl of his dreams. But when FBI agent Carl Hanratty gets wind of Frank's lies, he pursues him across the country to make him pay for his crimes.
The cast includes Danny Holmes as Frank Abagnale Jr; Chandler Hinojoza as FBI Agent Hanratty; Savannah Joblin-Smith as Brenda Strong; Nikki Dubose as Paula Abagnale; Ash Gimler as Frank Abagnale Sr.; Troy Martin at Roger Strong; Nicole Killian as Carol Strong; and an amazing choir and ensemble cast.
