The 57th Annual Farm and Ranch Tour was held Tuesday and was highlighted by not one, but two important awards.
As always, the tour culminated in the presentation of the Joe B. Fulgham Agriculturist of the Year Award. This year, the award was presented to Julie Moore.
"It was very unexpected," she said. "It means a lot, particularly when I look at the names and I have helped choose some of those names. Nearly all of those people I have known and they have been a huge influence on how I did my job."
In addition, this year the inaugural Jay Benson Memorial Award was presented to Danny Davis.
The award was sponsored by Dr. John and Ginger Morton and determined by the Benson family to honor Jay Benson's legacy. He was one of the founders of the tour 57 years ago. Mrs. Barbara and Buffy Benson were in attendance at the ceremony.
The two award presentations capped a meaningful day that saw the Athens Chamber of Commerce bring back the tour after a two-year hiatus because of the pandemic.
The three stops that comprised this year's tour were:
6 Forks Farm
Oakview Ranch
Cook Ranch Beef
The tour also stopped for refreshments at the Living for the Brand Cowboy Church.
The guest speaker was Dr. Charles Long, the Resident Director of Research at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center at Overton, who spoke about the mission of the Overton center.
Lunch was provided by Danny's Smokehouse Barbecue.
The title sponsor for the event was the Veterinary Medical Center of Athens.
Other sponsors included: Athens ISD, First State Bank, Lilly Enterprises McDonald's, Oncor, Park Highland Nursing and Rehabilitation, Republic Services, Trinity Valley Community College, Trinity Valley Electric Coop, UT Health Athens, Benson's Treats and Eats, Frentress Engineering, Silverline Roofing and Construction, Sue Brannan REALTOR, and Texas Farm Bureau Insurance.
