During Monday night’s monthly meeting of the Athens ISD Board of Trustees, board members were presented with a positive report from the firm that audited the district’s financial records for the previous school year.
“I’m proud of you all,” said Mishal Majewski, an audit supervisor with the accounting firm of Patillo, Brown & Hill.
The independent financial report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2024, was issued with the most desirable opinion possible: a “clean, unmodified opinion.” Meaning, explained Majewski, “we didn’t find anything incorrect that would materially impact your decision making as members of the board.”
Majewski particularly noted the district’s general fund balance, which includes reserve funds capable of covering seven months’ worth of expenditures — more than the three months required by the Texas Education Agency. And she commended district leadership for completing the fiscal year under budget.
“That’s very impressive," she said.
Chief Financial Officer Randy Jones explained the district was able to appropriately utilize the remainder of COVID-era-issued federal grant funds (particularly ESSER III) as well as some federal Title 1 funds to preserve monies in the general fund that would otherwise have been used.
The board voted unanimously to accept the audit report.
In other board action, trustees voted to award the whole of Athens ISD’s allotted 642 votes to support their nominee, Charles “Charlie” Tidmore, to serve on the Henderson County Appraisal District (HCAD) Board of Directors. The HCAD board consists of five elected members. There are seven candidates on the ballot: Maurice Cox, Adam Davis, Greg Figueroa, Larry Massingill, Don McAfee, Greg Wyatt, and Tidmore. The five who receive the most votes from the governing boards of relevant taxing entities will serve.
