Lady Hornets 54 - Eaglettes 30
Fueled by a 22-1 run in the third and fourth quarters that spanned nearly 10 minutes, the Athens Lady Hornets beat the Canton Eaglettes Tuesday, 54-30.
The win evens the Lady Hornets' district record at 1-1.
Instead of its normally aggressive pressure defense, Athens dropped back into a modified triangle-and-2 zone that confused Canton and held the Eaglettes to just 17 points through three quarters. Emily Mahmoud was particularly effective in shadowing Canton's point guards.
In the meantime, Athens was disciplined on offense and spread the ball around with seven Lady Hornets scoring.
Athens was led by Mimi McCollister with 18 points and Karlie Cook with 14. Janessa Kiser added 8, Kyra Dawson and Tori Williams each had 4, and Emily Mahmoud and Christina Woolverton had 3 each.
Canton was led by Amari Welch with 8 points.
Eagles 57 - Hornets 45
The Athens Hornets fought back from a 20-point halftime deficit and cut the game to single digits in the fourth quarter, but couldn't complete the comeback and fell 57-45 to Canton Tuesday night.
The game was the district opener for the Hornets.
Athens won both the third (13-11) and fourth (19-13) quarters, but it wasn't enough to overcome a difficult second quarter when they were outscored 21-5.
Athens was led by Jaden Crane with 14 points and Eli Rincon with 11. Connor Woodard had 9, Jacorian Hemphill and Derek Killingsworth had 4 each, and Jonte Johnson had 3.
Canton was led by Ja'Braylon Pickens with 25 points.
