Athens ISD had a gift for employees as school let out Thursday for the Thanksgiving holiday — a check!
AISD employees each received a "COVID stipend" from administrators and school board members to say thank you for the extra work they've put in during the pandemic.
"It is an expression of their appreciation for all the extra work the staff has had to do beginning last March when the shutdown occurred," said Superintendent Dr. Janie Sims, "and happening all through the summer, and everything they've had to do extra during this year because of COVID."
While handing out the stipends, School Board President Alicea Elliott said, "We wanted to thank all the teachers for all the hard work you've done and the extra you've had to do during these trying times."
Dr. Sims pointed out that teachers had to effectively do double work with both in-person and virtual classes. She said janitors, cafeteria workers, and bus drivers all had to learn new ways to do their jobs to fight the spread of the coronavirus.
"There's not a single district employee who has not put in extra time and extra effort," she said. "There's not a single individual who has not gone above and beyond."
And they are all a little happier now going into Thanksgiving break, as well.
