Athens ISD will be offering tuition-free, online classes for grades 6 through 12.
In a Facebook post, Assistant Superintendent Jami Ivey said, “This is an exciting new way to reach those who, for a variety of reasons, may not prefer a traditional classroom setting. And it’s available to sixth- through twelfth-graders across the state, not only students who live within our public school district.”
Officials said this program was in the works before the current pandemic and is not a reaction to the coronavirus.
The new program, called the Athens Virtual Academy, offers “fully-accredited, on-line courses taught by highly-qualified teachers who help provide a personalized learning experience for every student.”
According to the post, the academy offers more than 300 accredited courses, such as world languages, fine arts and other electives, advanced placement classes, career and technical education classes, and college and career readiness classes. In addition, Athens Virtual Academy students have the option to participate in extracurricular opportunities and social activities at Athens ISD.
With administrator approval, a student could even create a mixed education experience with some in-school classes and some online classes.
AISD says the new academy works for “homeschooling families; advanced students who work through courses rapidly; students who read or learn at a slower pace than their peers; students who want to graduate early; students who need a different learning environment; and students who require a flexible schedule.”
