Athens falls to Kilgore at home, 49-14
The undermanned Athens Hornets struggled against district powerhouse Kilgore Friday night, falling to the Bulldogs, 49-14.
The loss drops Athens to 4-5, 0-5 on the year, while Kilgore improves to 7-2, 5-0. Kilgore will host Lindale next week to determine the district champion.
The Hornets were able to stay with the Bulldogs early Friday night, holding an 8-7 lead at the end of the first quarter on the power of a Jecory Roberts 10-yard touchdown run and a 2-pt conversion pass from Ty Arroyo to Daniel Stanley.
Kilgore, however, scored 14 points in the space of 40 seconds to take a 21-8 lead and never looked back.
The Bulldogs were led by Trayveon Epps with touchdown runs of 10, 80, and 10 yards.
Athens added a second half touchdown on a 7-yard Jecory Roberts TD run (video above). Roberts finished the night with 115 yards and the two touchdowns.
The Hornets also forced a turnover to end the first half when Caleb Bennett defended a pass thrown into the end zone. The ball was batted into the air and intercepted by Trey Manning. That was the last play of the first half.
The Hornets will finish the season on the road next week in Mabank. The Panthers lost to Henderson Friday night, 27-20.
