WILLS POINT -- Athens basketball had a big night Tuesday in Wills Point with both the boys and the girls notching double-digit wins. Both teams will return home Friday night to host Van.
Lady Hornets 65 - Lady Tigers 32
The Athens Lady Hornets dominated Wills Point Tuesday night, riding their pressure defense to a 65-32 win.
The victory improves the Lady Hornets' district record to 3-1.
The Athens defense was so stingy, the Lady Hornets held Wills Point scoreless for 10 minutes of the first half and shut out the Lady Tigers in the second quarter. They also won the turnover battle, 31-13.
The Lady Hornets were led offensively by Mimi McCollister with 26 points (5 three's) and Janessa Kiser with 17. Both McKenzie Hair and Karlie Cook added 6, Tori Williams 5, and Emily Mahmoud had 1.
Wills Point was led by Payton Lawson and Angelina Fields with 9 points each.
Hornets 55 - Wills Point 41
The Athens Hornets used a 12-0 first quarter run to build a lead that they never relinquished Tuesday night on their way to beating Wills Point, 55-41.
Although the Tigers battled back and cut the score to as close as 1 point in the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Hornets showed resilience and were able to re-establish some breathing room each time. Eight different players scored for the Hornets on the night.
The win improves the Hornets' district record to 2-1 on the year.
The Hornets were led by Connor Woodard with 18 points. Derek Killingsworth added 8, Eli RIncon and Jacorian Hemphill each had 7, Jaden Crane 6, Connor Clay 4, Jonte Johnson 3, and Jorian Ray 2.
Wills Point was led by Nathan Allen with 12 points.
